THE DALLOWAYS' DREAMPOP CRUSADE REACHES JAPAN
Local Band Secures Album Distribution Overseas
Fresno, California -- January 04, 2005 -- Local dreampop quintet The Dalloways have made it to Japan! Well, their new album has, at any rate. Penalty Crusade, the band's latest LP released December 2004, will reach an entirely new market through Tower Records and HMV stores across the Japanese isles.
Trolley Bus, an independent record label located in Osaka, will distribute the album as a Japanese release. When asked what prompted him to carry the CD, Yoshinaru Imamura, label owner, said, The Dalloways create strong melodies that Japanese people have come to expect from bands outside of Japan.
"This is a very big deal for us," says band leader Gary Enns about the distribution deal. "As an indie group doing everything for ourselves, it is very satisfying when others in the business admire our work enough to invest in it.
The Dalloways already distribute their music worldwide through Internet distributor CDBaby.com, where the new album tops the editor's pick lists for both California Pop and, oddly enough, Brit Pop categories. So why go with a Japanese distributor? Enns says, "Our CD's will be stocked on the shelves and played at listening stations at major chains in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. A CD has a much better chance of being sold when it's in front of a potential buyer."
Traditionally, physical CD distribution to corporate music chains such as Tower Records is notoriously difficult to acquire for unsigned acts like The Dalloways. Distributors in the U.S. look for groups that can move large volumes of CDs quickly. The Dalloways hope that the already brisk sales of their CD in the states and overseas in countries such as Japan will lead to larger physical distribution in the U.S.
Is there a Japanese tour in the works for The Dalloways? "Financially, it's a hard trip for any indie band," Enns says. "Its pay-to-play over there, so youve got to pull a crowd or you go broke fast. But it's a dream of ours, and distribution is a first step in building a Japanese fan base."
To celebrate the new distribution deal, The Dalloways will headline an all-ages show in Fresno Friday, February 4th at The Starline. For show information as well as interesting links into the world of Japanese music distribution, visit www.dalloways.com.
