The Dalloways have been playing music for just over four years, residing in Fresno, California. I've seen and played shows with them a few times throughout their years, but it wasn't until the red cent addition of Nico Rhodes on keys and Ricky Gonzales on guitar that the formula really seemed to be complete. These new members broadened their soundscape, completing their mission. A mission to bring you their take on 80's era, British influenced, dream pop. Check 'em out at Howie & Son's Pizza on Saturday, February 12th to see what 1 mean.

Vernal: Who's in the band and what's their function?

Gerhard: Gerhard Enns: vocals, guitars, Aaron Wall: drums, Matt Wall: bass, Ricky Gonzales: guitars, Nico Rhodes: keyboards

V: Give us a Dalloways history lesson.

G: The Dalloways were born out of a love for beautiful post-punk edge a-la The Smiths, The Go-Betweens, The Cure. Singer/songwriter Gerhard Enns, drummer/producer Aaron Wall (MC for Latin hip hop act 40 Watt Hype), and his bassist brother Matt Wall began The Dalloways in 2000, releasing a five song self-titled EP to rave reviews. Songs from the EP were released on Velvet Blue Music's Strength in Numbers and KFSR 90.7's Greatest Unknown Hits compilations. For the lush dreampop sound of the new Penalty Crusade album and tour, the band recruited guitar phenom Ricky Gonzales and synth player Nico Rhodes. The band is currently on tour up and down the West Coast and is planning an East Coast tour for the summer. Also, due to an overseas distribution deal, a longshot Japanese tour may be in the cards for the near future. The band self-produced and mixed their new CD and then sent it away for mastering by the pro's at Bernie Grundman Studios (Blondie, Beck, Beastie Boys, Bowie Morrissey, their list of credits goes on and on). The new album takes the band in a Brit pop/dreampop direction, with beautiful delay guitars and feedback interlaced with synth sounds akin to The Flaming Lips.

V: What are some musical influences that the band shares (or list individually)?

G: The Cure, The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, Prefab Sprout, and The Dream Academy

V: What were the 5 best records made in 2004 ?

G: Here are a few the band digs collectively, some of which were released at the end of 2003: Antics by Interpol: Hopes and Fears by Keane; Dear Catastrophe Waitress by Belle and Sebastian; Chutes Too Narrow by The Shins; The Happiest Days of Our Lives by My Favorite.

V: Fat ties or skinny ties?

G: What a silly question! (The band came up with it, by the way.) But here's our answer: we're all about the standard silk tie and double Windsor knot. But skinny tie aficionados, don't worry, the music's got a tinge of new wave I think you'll like, despite our fashion differences.

V: Anything else Visalians should know about Dalloways?

G: The Dalloways love meeting new people and are looking forward to making some new Visalia friends. Bird in Box Records also offers killer merch at the shows to support the band on tour, including American Apparel and Classic Girl t-shirts, stickers, buttons, posters, and more.
